God gave us His Word, revealing Himself and everything He knows that we need to know. We seldom adequately marvel at this profound privilege. Through God’s Word, we understand something of God’s nature, character, and sovereign plan for human history. We learn how sin sabotaged humanity and how God sacrificed His Son to redeem what sin had stolen. The Bible teaches us that history is moving toward a final victory He will accomplish. And if that were not enough, God gives His Spirit to live within believers, illuminating their minds to understand and believe His truth!

The Bible is truly a treasure, given to us by God.

The Bible contains divine revelation that God’s Spirit delivered through more than 40 human authors. (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21) The Bible stands on eternal truth, which cannot change. (Isaiah 40:8) By the Spirit’s power, Scripture pierces the human heart, unmasking our sinfulness and need for God. (Hebrews 4:12) The Bible contains life-giving truth and trustworthy promises that offer hope and stability to God’s people.

Without eyes fixed on the Bible as our standard, we are left to make sense of life based on the wavering whims of our time-bound, earth-oriented understanding. If we do not look to our Creator to define what is true and yield to His authority, we rely only on human assets, which prove limited and wanting. If we view the Bible as a dusty book that only applies to weak and culturally irrelevant people, we will fail to know God as He truly is.

Ignoring or rejecting the Bible means missing life’s treasure of eternal truth and facing forever without hope.

In His Word, God gave us a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. (Psalm 119:105) The Holy Spirit takes biblical truths and unlocks our minds to understand what human wisdom alone cannot grasp. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

God’s Word provides fresh food for our hungry souls, speaking to our greatest needs and satisfying our deepest longings. The Bible reflects God’s infinite nature. A lifetime of study cannot exhaust the riches within God’s beautiful Word. It is living and breathing. (Hebrews 4:12) Knowing God’s Word helps us recognize Satan’s lies and this world’s errors. God’s Word speaks with simultaneous simplicity, clarity, and depth that we can teach to infants but also ponder until our last breath.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s Word abides forever. (Matthew 24:35)

I like Colson’s book. I love Glenn Sunshine’s book. I do not like Truman’s book.

So, the thinking process changed from how worldviews move to answer the questions of

• Nature

• God

• Humanity

to the categories of

• Creation

• Fall

• Redemption

• Restoration.

So, I’m doing a change-up.

But I will admit honestly, this whole thing has been a struggle.

I spend regular time in the Bible. It is a living and breathing document. But looking at the world Biblically is not as easy as it sounds. It’s not automatic. I’m starting to get it. But I’m thinking this whole Substack is going to change direction. I just don’t know which way I’m going.

What does it mean to be human?

It’s the question beneath every cultural conversation, every identity debate, every ache we carry, and every longing we feel. It’s the question that arises when life feels confusing or when suffering makes us wonder who we are and what we’re for.

Our world wrestles with this question because we’ve forgotten the story we’re in.

and the God who wrote it.

Today, we define ourselves by feelings, desires, self-expression, or behavior.

Scripture tells a different story, a bigger, truer one. To understand ourselves, our culture, and our ongoing identity crisis, we have to return to the beginning.

Let’s step back and remember who we really are.

The Crisis of Identity

We live in a world struggling to answer the most basic question:

What does it mean to be human?

For centuries, people understood humanity in terms of purpose, design, morality, and relationship with God. The definition slowly shifted:

• From metaphysical beings with a given nature

• To beings defined by feelings who are told to “create ourselves”

This shift didn’t just change morality; it changed anthropology. We no longer know what humans are for.

A culture that loses God eventually loses the meaning of humanity.

Yet Scripture is clear:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”

Psalm 8:4–5 (NIV)

Humanity carries glory — a weight of worth and meaning given by God Himself.

When culture reduces humanity to emotions or urges, we lose sight of that glory.

Losing God Means Losing Ourselves

Every attempt to define humanity apart from God leads to confusion. Paul diagnosed this long ago:

“Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images…”
Romans 1:22–23 (CSB)

When we push God to the edges — or remove Him entirely — our understanding of humanity collapses.

without the One who defines us, we become either less than human… or more confused than ever.

We were not created to be self-defined.
We were created to be God-defined.

This is why the question - “What does it mean to be human?” is not just philosophical. It’s deeply spiritual.

Our humanity is not the problem; sin is.

Theistic and biblical world views are not synonymous. We should not confuse a mere belief in God with a biblical worldview.

Please don’t call it a Christian worldview either. The definition and concept of Christianity vary too much. It may be a little more than Theism.

The word Christian was initially a derogatory term for the first believers.

My focus here is Biblical over Christian

I mean the Bible as the divinely inspired writings whose purpose is to point to Jesus.

“Human beings and the universe in which they reside are the creation of God who has revealed himself in Scripture.”

It is through God‘s Word that we may properly understand God‘s World.

A Biblical worldview fills in many of the gaps that tell us of God’s nature and plans.

Confronting God

• of God to His creation…

From a biblical perspective, God is seen as an individual being with all attributes of personality, with emotions. The profound implication is that He can personally relate to man.

The relationship is a two-way street. The social aspect allows for mutual communication and shared emotions.

• of God in all history…

Human history is not a series of random, unplanned events. God knows the future; nothing escapes his concern or purpose. History is not a personal interpretation of historic events.

• of God in His personhood…

Theism holds that there is only one God.

The Biblical worldview adds the dimension of triunity, three in personality yet one in essence, Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

• of God in the Savior…

The most important focus of a biblical worldview is the person of Jesus Christ.

His life and teachings are the central core of truth.

We consider the Bible authoritative because Jesus did. The Bible teaches that Jesus is the focal point of all creation and history.

He is God who became man. Jesus is the unique incarnation of deity. He is not one among many.

• of God through the Spirit…

God is active in the lives of believers via the Holy Spirit. He can be thought of as the translator between humanity and the spiritual dimension of reality. He draws humankind to God by convincing them of their need for repentance. He enters the life of a believer and remains present within the believer’s life as a guide and teacher. God is not just out there. He is right here.

Confronting Humanity

Mankind is a special creation of God. We are more than physical beings. God has specially designed humanity to reflect His glory.

Every person, without regard to his spiritual status, bears the image of God.

This image has been damaged by sin. Humanity has become self-serving rather than God serving. Our thoughts are hostile to God.

As a result of our rebellion, we find ourselves alienated from ourselves. A bit of schizophrenia.

“We are separated from ourselves psychologically.”

Francis Schaeffer

This separation can only be remedied by God Himself. Salvation and redemption through Christ by the grace of God.

Confronting Nature

The act of creation is the basis for the biblical view of nature.

The created world is distinct from the Creator.

The earth, at least in its present form, is not eternal. One of the results of sin is that the earth is cursed and subjected to decay.

The Bible affirms clearly that God is before, above, and beyond the universe.

Reflection Question

How does believing that God is the Creator, humanity is made in His image, and nature is His handiwork change the way you see your daily life and decisions?

Most of the world’s population believes in some form of personal deity. Either God exists, or He does not. Theism begins with the assumption that He does exist.

The Big Questions of Life

• God – Does He exist? Is he personal or impersonal? Does he care about me? Will he hold me accountable?

• Humanity – What does it mean to be human? Do I have a soul? Why am I here?

• Nature – Is the world something I control, or does it control me? Is it friendly, hostile, or neutral?

In this post, we’ll look at how theism answers the questions of God, humanity, and nature—and then consider some of the ways it is expressed in the world today.

Theism’s Answer About God

God is a personal being who is separate from the natural world. He exists in a different way than His creation.

• Uncreated

• Unchanging

• Self-Sufficient

God is active within the physical realm. He can…

• intercede in human affairs

• communicate with people

• direct the course of history.

God is “a person without a body (i.e., a spirit), present everywhere, the creator and sustainer of the universe, a free agent, able to do everything (i.e., omnipotent), knowing all things, perfectly good, a source of moral obligation, immutable, eternal, a necessary being, holy, and worthy of worship.”

Theism’s Answer About Humanity

In light of God’s existence, I look beyond myself for answers. My existence is not by chance.

Let’s look through three windows: dependence, dignity, and dominion.

• Dependence – I am not autonomous. My existence, my breath, and my life are dependent on God. I am also accountable to Him as the moral judge of my life.

• Dignity – I am created by God and reflect His image. That means I am unique, valuable, and set apart. All human life has dignity because our worth comes from Him. Dignity is further underscored by immortality—our lives continue beyond death. One life, one death, one judgment.

• Dominion – Humanity is called to steward creation, not exploit it, but nurture it. Our essential qualities reach beyond the natural world.

Theism’s Answer About Nature

The natural world exists because God chose to create it. Everything is derived from Him.

Real things do exist beyond the physical: angels, the human soul, immortality, and miracles.

Nature is purposeful, designed, and dependent on Him. Yet, it is not eternal. Its future rests securely in His hands. Even physicists point out that the world is running down (entropy).

Expressions and Variations of Theism

While theism begins with the belief in a personal, active God, it takes different forms.

1. Deism – God created the world but does not intervene. He remains beyond it, and divine revelation is impossible. The only way to know Him is through nature itself.

2. Finitism – God exists but has limitations. He is unable to fully control or destroy evil. Rabbi Harold Kushner, in his book When Bad Things Happen to Good People, reflects this view when he suggests that God has “a hard time keeping chaos in check and limiting the damage evil can do.”

3. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity – All are major theistic religions. Each affirms one God but differs in its understanding of revelation, humanity, and salvation.

Closing Thoughts

Theism offers coherent answers to the most important questions of life. God is personal, active, and distinct from creation. Humanity is dignified, dependent, and responsible for stewarding the world entrusted to us. Nature itself is purposeful and sustained by God.

There are varying categories of belief even in the three major religions. They may be known as sects, factions, or denominations. Each with different interpretations of their scripture or holy book.

The Big Questions of Life

Have you ever stopped to think about the questions that circle beneath the surface of daily life? Questions like:

1. God – Does He exist? Is He personal or impersonal? Does He care about me? Will He hold me accountable?

2. Humanity – What does it mean to be human? Do I have a soul? Why am I here?

3. Nature – Is the world something I control, or does it control me? Is it friendly, hostile, or neutral?

Whether we realize it or not, how we answer these questions forms our worldview, and our worldview shapes how we live.

In this post, I’m looking at Transcendentalism through the lens of those three questions. I will give some examples of how you might see it presented in the world today.

A definition of transcendentalism: the primacy of the spiritual and things beyond ordinary experience over the material or observable.

Transcendentalism didn’t come out of nowhere. Much of this thinking can be traced back to a philosophical and spiritual movement that began in New England during the 19th century.

Unhappy with what they saw as the stale, rational theology of Christianity and the spiritual emptiness of deism, thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau wanted to bring God back into everyday life. But the “God” they spoke of looked very different from the God of Scripture.

Transcendentalism’s Answer to God

• God is an impersonal force.

• God and the universe are inseparable, but not equal.

• God is not a personal being, beyond personality.

All things are a unified whole. This belief is called monism, the idea that all things are ultimately one. A tree, a rock, an animal, and a person are simply different expressions of the same divine essence, different forms of one reality.

In this view, God is not someone to know, love, or obey. He is more like a life force or energy that flows through all reality.

Food for thought: If God is not a person/ has no personality, why do we pray?

Transcendentalism’s Answer to Humanity

• Man’s nature is an extension of the divine oneness.

• Our moral nature is a product of our physical limitations.

• Truth, salvation, peace, and enlightenment are all found within.

The problem is not sin or moral failure but ignorance. People simply don’t realize their true nature.

Salvation, then, is not forgiveness or reconciliation. It is awakening. To recognize one’s own divinity and live in harmony with the unity of all things.

Man has a broken vision of the oneness of all things. He sees life in fragments – a unique self or universal connection.

His focus on his unique self disconnected him from the universe, resulting in selfish pursuits.

The idea is moving beyond individuality to “become one” with the ultimate reality, actualizing the divine within.

Food for thought: What do you think of reincarnation? Do you really want to come do this all over again?

Transcendentalism’s Answer to Nature

• Focus is on the fabric of reality underlying the physical world.

• There is much disagreement as to the exact nature of reality.

• It is sacred but illusory

Transcendentalism reimagines the natural world. On the one hand, nature is sacred because it is infused with divinity. Even trees and animals are seen as spiritual beings. On the other hand, the physical realm is not the ultimate reality. What we see and touch is considered deceptive.

Because of this, scientific inquiry may be downplayed, as it focuses too much on physical or temporal things instead of mystical or spiritual experiences. Instead of analyzing nature, the goal is to feel connected to it—to experience moments of unity with the universe.

How Transcendentalism Shows Up in Culture

Though it began nearly 200 years ago, transcendentalist thought continues to shape our society.

• New Age spirituality: practices like astrology and the occult.

• Self-deification: elevating of self to the status of a god.

• Popular culture: from yoga to meditation

• Animism: attributing conscious life to nature and inanimate objects.

• Gnosticism: matter is evil, and emancipation comes through knowledge of spiritual truth.

• Pantheism: worship of all gods indifferently.

Transcendentalism offers the world as we want it to be.

Why?

A core belief in the inherent goodness of people and nature. Where peace and unity are possible.

It’s no wonder it still appeals to so many today.

A definition of Naturalism: Ultimate reality is material. The physical universe is all there is. There is nothing beyond what we can take in with the senses or measure.

Naturalism’s Answer About God

According to Naturalism, there is no God and no spiritual reality. What you see is all there is.

• God does not exist or is not necessary.

• Your soul, personality, and thoughts die with your body.

• Belief in God is explained away as a human invention—created to give purpose or soothe the fear of death.

Naturalism leans on the scientific method: only what can be tested, measured, and proven is considered real. Before 1800, atheists were almost unheard of. Most scientists investigated the natural world to strengthen their belief in God.

Science was explaining things we didn’t previously understand, so we began to think our intellect was the answer. But as culture shifted, so did our assumptions. Agnosticism (a “maybe, maybe not” approach to God) began to take root, and for many, uncertainty became the default.

Food for thought: Why is a belief in god(s) a universal characteristic of all humanity?

Naturalism’s Answer About Humanity

If there is no God, then what are we? According to Naturalism:

• Humans are machines.

• Thoughts and personality are only chemical and electrical impulses in the brain.

• There is no soul, no divine image, no ultimate purpose.

• Morality is nothing more than social convention—rules society makes up to keep order.

The individual is the center of moral decision. Whatever promotes happiness and self-identity is “good” and whatever hinders that is “bad.” There is no meaning for the universe or humanity.

This view leaves human dignity negotiable. If we are just highly evolved animals, then what makes one life more valuable than another?

Food for thought: Why do we care so much when we lose a loved one and keep them alive in our hearts with stories about memories?

Naturalism’s Answer About Nature

Nature, according to Naturalism, is all that exists.

• The universe is self-creating and self-organizing.

• Nothing supernatural exists.

• Humanity is left at the mercy of impersonal forces—chance, evolution, natural selection.

It’s a closed system, and there is no “beyond.” It is up to humans to understand how nature works and harness its power to improve human life. Matter is all that matters. Anything beyond the physical realm is an illusion.

Food for thought: Is this why some think the planet will heal if there were fewer of us on it?

How Naturalism Shows Up in Culture

Naturalism expresses itself in different ways. This is not a definitive list.

• Nihilism – life is meaningless, nothing matters.

• Existentialism – since there’s no meaning, you must create your own.

• Hedonism – pleasure is good, pain is bad, so chase what feels good.

• Humanism – humanity itself is the highest good; human needs and progress matter most.

Each one is an attempt to live in a world without God.

If Naturalism is true, what does that mean for purpose, morality, and hope?

It means right and wrong are subjective.
It means death is the end, and nothing we do ultimately matters.

We all forge ahead in life, giving little thought to worldview, philosophy of life, or any other such intellectual endeavor. Life gets compartmentalized, and that compartmentalization leads to fragmentation.

Going through life reacting, solving problems as they come, chasing goals, and managing responsibilities

We rarely pause long enough to ask the bigger questions. The ones underneath all our choices, our worries, and even our hopes.

Most of us don’t consciously evaluate our beliefs, especially the basic/essential ones, which become the foundation we build all the others on. Instead, we end up catching our worldview the same way we catch a cold: by absorbing it from the world around us.

Unfortunately, that’s a life lived backwards.

Living Backwards

When we don’t think deeply about our worldview, we simply absorb the values and behaviors considered “normal” in our culture. Those repeated behaviors get reinforced into values, and eventually, they harden into ultimate beliefs.

In other words:

Behavior → Values → Worldview

It’s upside down. It’s unstable. And it leads to chaos, because it builds life on shifting sands of culture, habit, and unexamined assumptions.

We behave without much thought, on autopilot, because we don’t know our values. We end up feeling vulnerable and confused in the crazy world we have now.

Living with Intention

But there’s a better way. Imagine a triangle.

At the bottom—the foundation—you have your worldview: the framework of beliefs through which you interpret reality.

• (your thoughts and assumptions about life’s biggest questions)

That worldview shapes your values: what you say matters most.
Your values then shape your behavior: your actions, whether intentional or reactive.

So the healthy flow looks like this:

Worldview → Values → Behavior

When we think about our thoughts and question our feelings, we don’t just believe without investigation because that’s what the media says, or “it’s just how I was raised.”

This is why worldview matters. It’s how you interpret reality and will eventually show up in what you do.

Here’s the thing: worldviews are never passive.

They are confrontational. They force us to answer the questions we can’t escape.

1. Origins – Where did everything come from? Is there a higher power?

2. Meaning – What is the purpose of life? What is my purpose?

3. Morality – Is there right and wrong, and who decides?

4. Destiny – What happens after I die?

5. Identity – Who am I? Why am I here? How do I fit into the bigger story?

Our answers to these questions, whether thought through or not, shape how we see the world and how we live every single day.

The Point

Today, in the information age, we are bombarded with a smorgasbord of worldviews. Competing voices clamor for our attention, each claiming to explain reality. But how do we sift through them? Do any of them truly reflect reality?

The truth is, man’s attempts to explain existence are just that—man’s attempts. Our experience and perceptions of this vast universe are limited and inadequate.

We don’t know what we don’t know.

We all see the same world but interpret it differently. The “glasses” we wear don’t shape reality itself, but they do shape how we explain and interpret life.

You’re going to live from a worldview either way. The question is: will it be one you’ve chosen and examined—or one you’ve simply absorbed without thinking?

Recognize that you do have a worldview, humbly accept that your vision is incomplete, and you might need help from outside yourself if you want to see clearly.

Stick with me. In future posts, I will unpack some worldviews through the lens of how they wrestle with God, humanity, and nature, and some ways you see them expressed in the world.

Have you ever paused long enough to ask yourself:

Is life worth living, or is it a meaningless absurdity? Is it even something worth caring about?

If life is meaningless, there is no need to justify our choices, values, or goals.

If life has meaning, it becomes a journey to find a philosophy of life—a reason for living.

How you answer that question sets the stage for everything—how you choose to live, what you value, and even the quiet decisions no one else sees.

Today, we are good at asking “how”? We tinker with methods, hacks, and quick fixes. We rarely ask “why”? Or slow down enough to wrestle with deeper questions:

• Does life have meaning?

• Is there a reason for living?

• Why am I here?

Our worldview is the lens through which we interpret everything we experience. It’s like putting on a pair of glasses—sometimes they sharpen reality, and sometimes they distort it. Remember, as a kid, when you tried on your grandma’s glasses and everything went fuzzy? That’s what it’s like when our worldview isn’t clear.

What’s Your Lens Made Of?

Whether we realize it or not, each of us already has a worldview.

• Maybe yours is well-defined, carefully chosen after deep reflection.

• Or maybe it’s a smorgasbord, a little of this and a little of that, picked up from family, culture, social media, or your own experiences.

Are they rose colored?

We all have a “life story” made up of thoughts about why we are here and how we fit into this world. Our thoughts become our beliefs. Those beliefs become assumptions we use as building blocks for the framework of our lives.

So, how much of the story we tell ourselves is true? How many of us stop to think about our thoughts, and do we believe them?

Start challenging your assumptions. As the diagram shows, they make an ass of you and me.

We don’t know what we don’t know, and that’s okay!

Here’s the Real Question

It’s not Do I have a worldview?—you do.
The real question is: Which worldview do I have?

For me, the clearest vision came when I put on the lens of faith in Jesus. Suddenly, life made sense—not because all my questions were answered, but because I knew the One who holds the answers.

When I first heard the term “worldview,” I thought it sounded a little academic.
Something for scholars or pastors.

But then I realized:
A worldview isn’t something only theologians have.

It’s something we all have.
Even if we don’t know it.

And it’s shaping everything.

🧠 So, what is a worldview?

At its simplest, a worldview is the lens through which you see and interpret life.
It’s the story you believe about what’s real, what’s true, what matters, and what makes life meaningful.

It answers questions like:

• Who am I?

• Why am I here?

• What’s gone wrong with the world?

• What can fix it?

• What’s worth living for?

Every person — whether you follow Jesus, are a spiritual seeker, call yourself an atheist, or someone who never thinks about faith — lives by a set of beliefs that shape how they make sense of the world.

And here’s the thing:
Most people don’t realize they’re living by a worldview.
They’re just absorbing it — from media, friends, trauma, trends, or culture.

That was me, too, for a long time.

⚠️ The danger of a borrowed worldview

For years, I was living what looked like a “good” life — but I had unknowingly absorbed parts of a very different worldview.

One that said:

• You are what you do.

• Success = worth.

• Your feelings are your truth.

• If you’re suffering, you must be doing something wrong.

• God is good… if life is going well.

But then everything unraveled.
My husband got a D.U.I. and 3 years later had brain surgery with multiple complications.
My illusions about control, performance, and “being a good person” were shattered.

And Jesus met me there — not with religion, but with reality.
With Himself.

✝️ A biblical worldview isn’t just having the right answers

It’s about learning to see the whole world — people, politics, pain, purpose, beauty, justice, gender, grief, truth — through the lens of God’s big story:

• 🕊 Creation — We were made by a good God, with purpose.

• 💔 Fall — Something has gone terribly wrong — and it affects everything.

• ✝️ Redemption — Jesus came to rescue, restore, and renew what was broken.

• 🌿 Restoration — One day, He will make all things new.

This story is true.
It’s good.
And it’s beautiful.

But most of us are surrounded by smaller stories that compete with it every single day.

🪞 Why worldview matters — and why I’m writing here

If we don’t learn to think clearly, we’ll feel our way through life — and culture will disciple us before we even realize it.

I don’t want to live numb, defensive, or afraid.
I want to see what’s true, hold onto what’s good, and delight in what is beautiful — even in a broken world.

That’s why I started this Substack.

To process what I’m learning.
To help you think clearly without feeling overwhelmed.
To share apologetics without the attitude — rooted in relationship, not religion.
And most of all:
To keep telling you about my Jesus.

Because He’s the only one who makes sense of it all.
